The Nationals Murray Lees gone after four DUI convictions

In the Tweed Daily News yesterday:

MURRAY Lees has resigned from his position as Tweed National Party chairman after being convicted of his fourth drink-driving offence at Murwillumbah Local Court yesterday.

Read the rest here.

Well, that's one blessing in an election year - Mr. Lees' style of election campaigning was always one of the more annoying aspects of NSW North Coast politics.

DRINK-DRIVING SERIOUS CRIME

MURRAY Lees' declaration that he has walked away from the National Party due to being convicted of his fourth criminal act of drink-driving left me wondering: Is there an entrenched culture within the local National Party ranks that road rules only apply to others?
This is the second publicly associated National Party figure before the Tweed courts in as many months due to their less than acceptable driving antics.
Tania Murdock similarly brushed off her loss of licence with the inference that it's really no big deal but the carnage on our roads over Christmas shatters her myth.
If Mr Lees is true to his word most people would wish him the best in his new life outside of the National Party and his attempts to reform himself but if this is just a political stunt to minimise the impact upon Tania Murdock's faltering campaign then he will stand condemned.
