Australian Politics 2012. I have to say it.............
Kevin Rudd resigning as Australia’s Foreign Minister in order to challenge Julia Gillard for leadership of the Federal Labor Party and the country :-
Big Mistake
Prime Minister Julia Gillard appointing un-elected senator designate Bob Carr as Australia’s Foreign Minister:-
Even Bigger Mistake
Opposition Leader Tony Abbott telling the world that he will be Australia’s next "elected" Prime Minister:-
Huge Mistake

I disagree on all counts.
Rudd's departure has cleared the air. He can focus on sorting out the details of all the stuff he promised from the back bench, plotting a return without the spotlight. He can use the time to improve his relationships with his colleagues, to improve his own behaviour. It gives time for Gillard to hang her own noose, so to speak. Whatever happens next can only be healthier for Rudd & Labor. An exit is better than self destruction.
Bob Carr's appointment requires no election whatsoever! Any talk of that sort is a right-wing rouse. He brings senior Labor leadership & experience to the party, untainted by Canberra. He's a Gillard ally. Say what you will over his premiership & connections to the NSW rot, he's got a clean slate now. He was never defeated at the ballot either.
As for Abbott, the dude is a walking mistake.
