Better access to film and TV programming for all Australians

From Regional Arts NSW December-January e-newletter:

In November Accessible Arts released an article on two rulings by the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) which will substantially increase access to regular film and television programming for Australians who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind or with low vision. In May 2010 the AHRC ruled that cinemas must meet their legislative requirements to provide access for Australians who are Deaf, hard of hearing, blind or with low vision. This was followed in October by the Commission's refusal to grant a temporary exemption from captioning of pay TV programs to ASTRA, the peak body for pay TV representing 34 broadcasters who operate 91 subscription TV channels. Sancha Donald, CEO of Accessible Arts, welcomes the AHRC rulings. "Viewing these decisions together I think we can gauge a shift in the way access to entertainment is being thought about," said Ms Donald. Accessible Arts has a variety of Disability Awareness and Access Training packages tailored to meet the needs of arts organisations, festivals and venues available online at http://www.aarts.net.au/training/

Kirrily is the Grafton Jacaranda Festival Queen in 2010

Congratulations to Kirrily Tough who this morning is waking to her third day as Grafton's Jacaranda Festival Queen.

Kirrily says of herself on the 76th Jacaranda Festival website;

I am 28 years old, married with 3 adorable small children. I am the only daughter of Ron & Petra Munro and was born here in Grafton attending Grafton Infants, Primary and High School, only leaving at age 18 to work on the Gold Coast before returning in 2006 to raise my family.

Every other contestant in the queen and princess categories also deserves a round of applause, for their efforts in both promoting the region and festival as well as adding beauty, personality and a sense of fun to festival functions.

Come and enjoy Opera With The Cows at Cowper, 17 October 2010

Travelling along the highway to Grafton I passed a banner which announced the very first Opera With The Cows on the NSW North Coast.

According to its official website:

Opera with the Cows is being presented jointly by the North Coast Flute Society and Cowper Public School. It is an exciting new event that will be held annually in the grounds of the school, opposite the mighty Clarence River. Are you around 10 years old and hankering to be a star? Look no further than the Lismore Show in October 2010

North Coast National Exhibition
125 Years Celebration
21 - 23 October 2010, Lismore, NSW

GIRLS - WHERE ARE YOU?

The search for a star continues across the Northern Rivers for a young girl to sing a feature song in LOCAL HEROES, the arena spectacular at the 2010 North Coast National (Lismore Show) in October.
The song will pay tribute to the SES volunteers who are always at the ready in times of need.

Local Heroes producer Mark Eady says he is looking for a girl, around 10 years old, who will have a leading role in the production and will be backed by a full choir. Mark is also looking for an experienced adult female singer.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for a girl and a woman with immense talent to sing to an audience of thousands," Mark said. "I've already cast the male roles but the perfect girl and feature female singer are still to be found!

The 125th anniversary Arena Spectacular, held over the three nights of the Lismore Show (October 21 – 23), will celebrate those ordinary men and women who daily do extraordinary things within our community.

"Local Heroes will be the largest theatrical tribute to our emergency service people ever staged and a behind the scenes peak at these ordinary women and men who achieve extraordinary things.

In my view we can't thank them enough," says John Gibson, North Coast National President.

Some of the groups to be celebrated are NSW Fire, SES, Police, Ambulance, Westpac Helicopter Rescue, Lifeguards and Nippers, Road Safety Officers (lollypop ladies), Animal Rescue groups, and more.

Already chosen to appear in Local Heroes are singers Jesse Mathews-Cooke from Ballina, St John's College Woodlawn student Courtney Macdade and young actors Shyarnah Tryhorn, Matilda Pleace, Marnie Johnston and Kathleen Caughey, Year 9 and 10 dance students from Trinity College, Lismore, Year 9 and 10 dance students from St John's College Woodlawn, junior dancers and the choir from Our Lady Help of Christians, the Woodlawn Senior Choir and the Winsum Loosesum Gospel Choir.

Real life local heroes, members of our region's emergency services, will also be a vital part of the arena spectacular.

To audition for Local Heroes, contact the producer Mark Eady on 0418 150 306, or North Coast National secretary Janelle Hancock on 6621 5916. You can also apply to audition on-line at www.ozworks.net - Click on Local Heroes Auditions.

Northern Rivers Regional Food Celebration, Lismore 21-23 October 2010

The Northern Rivers Regional Food Celebration
celebrating the authenticity of local producers and the biodiversity of northern NSW

The growing acknowledgment and reputation of the Northern Rivers region of NSW as a foodie destination with biodiverse, innovative food production is to be showcased at the inaugural Northern Rivers Regional Food Celebration to be held in Lismore from October 21 – 23.

The Northern Rivers is a place where food loves to grow and people love to grow it. Food based ecotourism and agritourism is destined to grow based on the region's sustainability commitment and the spiritual connection to nature which lends itself to visitor experiences.

Over three days at the Northern Rivers Regional Food Celebration, visitors can enjoy local produce, meet the growers and producers, and discover the extraordinary biodiversity of the region with everything from macadamia's, tropical fruits, guavas, chocolate, coffee, biodynamic muesli, organic meats, biodynamic fruit and vegetables, and artisan breads, to a local blue cheese that wins awards in France!

The Food Celebration will be a vibrant new element to the North Coast National Exhibition, the largest regional show in Australia, which will also include a Sustainability Living Expo.

The Northern Rivers Regional Food Celebration is an initiative of Northern Rivers Food, the recently formed industry based group which aims to support and develop all food related businesses in the NR Region. The Food Celebration is made possible with funding support from the NSW Department of Industry and Investment, which has partnered with Northern Rivers Food to assist with industry growth

Local and regional sustainable food ambassador consultant Alison Drover is working with Northern Rivers Food and its membership of local producers, and the North Coast National, to develop an event which showcases and celebrates the Northern Rivers as a food producing region. Alison works with business and community to support local food and sustainability and corporate responsibility. She has a reputation for designing creative events which connect people, planet and plate.

The Food Celebration will have a theme of' local' for each day of the event designed around the matching local produce. The menus will be designed to be affordable and accessible for show visitor and shared at convivial communal tables with opportunity to learn more about the region.

The message will be to support and celebrate local food and to celebrate the seasonality.

Top local chefs and producers will develop menus which salute the abundant produce of the lush Northern Rivers and demonstrate the region's reputation for sustainable growing and producing practices.

The Food Celebration will also feature demonstrations by local chefs from some of the region's highly regarded restaurants and schools will participate in a cooking competition, with young chefs cooking exclusively with local produce.

"Set in the lush green environs of Lismore's historic showgrounds, the Northern Rivers Food Celebration will celebrate the tastes and qualities of perhaps the most culturally diverse region of NSW. We anticipate that this event will become a must do on the foodie calendar, for locals and visitors from across the country, and these visitors will equally enjoy the amazing variety of activities on offer at the North Coast National," said event consultant Alison Drover.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR LOCAL MEDIA AND FOOD PRODUCERS

To participate in the Northern Rivers Food Expo, food businesses must be primarily located in the Northern Rivers region, the goods and/or services produced by the business must be primarily created within the region using local produce where available; and the business must have a commitment to using local labour for operations within the region.

"In 2010 the North Coast National will be proudly celebrating 125 years with a renewed focus on our local area and the many talents, skills and businesses that exist across our unique community. It will be a major showcase of the diversity of our region, its strength, talents and dynamism, of which food businesses – both growers and value adders – are increasingly important," said John Gibson, President of the North Coast National.
