McDonald's rubbishing Yamba in December 2010
McDonald's Yamba - only open days and the littering of surrounding streets begins
This blog is open to any who wish to comment on Australian society, the state of the environment or political shenanigans at Federal, State and Local Government level.
Yes, Kevin Rudd may be to blame for the 2011 Queensland floods, according to that beacon of rationality, Pastor Danny Nalliah of Catch the Fire Ministries on 8 January 2011:
Dear family & friends in Christ,
It is 11.50pm on Friday night the 7th of January. You might wonder what I am doing in my office at this time. Well we are all at the all night prayer meeting at the CTFM base. We started the prayer meeting at 7.30pm and would be finishing at 6am but this issue was so urgent, I thought I must get the info out to you as soon as possible, so that we can repent on behalf of Australia.
Around 8pm on Friday night the 7th of January we had a strong prompting by the Holy Spirit to repent on behalf of Australia. As we started doing so, I was reminded that every time America went against Israel, there was disaster in the land and this has been documented over the years.
Then at once I was reminded of Kevin Rudd speaking against Israel in Israel on 14th December 2010. It is very interesting that Kevin Rudd is from QLD. Is God trying to get our attention? Yes, I believe so.
Also the Lord said to us, “ I will humble Australia and bring her down on her knees. As she has taken pride in my blessing, and man has taken the glory and not given it to Me”.
Right now (12.30am - just after midnight) around 40 intercessors are crying out to the Lord and repenting on behalf of what Rudd has done against Israel. When I opened my email to write to you, I found the following email in my inbox and was amazed as to how God spoke to us about the same issue.
I have pasted below an article that some media are running with - BUT - only Bill Koenig has picked up the “spiritual ramifications” of this event & has been able to link it to the devastating floods in Queensland….Kevin Rudd’s home state!
Here’s the link to the original story from Bill Koenig (scroll down to find the article) http://www.watch.org/
Australia’s Rudd urged Israel to join the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and open all its nuclear facilities to UN inspectors
Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd has wrapped up a visit to the Middle East by telling Israel it should allow UN inspectors into its nuclear facilities.
His comments on Israel’s nuclear program gave Israeli officials an unpleasant surprise, as they were published online during a gala dinner in Jerusalem marking the friendship between Australia and Israel.
In an interview with the Australian newspaper, Mr Rudd not only called on Israel to join the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), but said it should open all its nuclear facilities to UN inspectors.
Australia flood rescue and relief efforts are under way to deal with what officials have called a “disaster of biblical proportions.”
Zechariah 12:3,9 “And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people; And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem”.
Please, Please, Please take some time to stand in the Gap for our nation Australia and repent and pray as in 2 Chronicles 7:13-14.
This is Kevin Rudd (on right) in real life during the flooding in an ABC News video here. Can’t see Nalliah anywhere.
Sure we’ll all love this Dorothy Mackellar poem again in about a month’s time.
The love of field and coppice,
Of green and shaded lanes.
Of ordered woods and gardens
Is running in your veins,
Strong love of grey-blue distance
Brown streams and soft dim skies
I know but cannot share it,
My love is otherwise.
I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror -
The wide brown land for me!
A stark white ring-barked forest
All tragic to the moon,
The sapphire-misted mountains,
The hot gold hush of noon.
Green tangle of the brushes,
Where lithe lianas coil,
And orchids deck the tree-tops
And ferns the warm dark soil.
Core of my heart, my country!
Her pitiless blue sky,
When sick at heart, around us,
We see the cattle die -
But then the grey clouds gather,
And we can bless again
The drumming of an army,
The steady, soaking rain.
Core of my heart, my country!
Land of the Rainbow Gold,
For flood and fire and famine,
She pays us back threefold -
Over the thirsty paddocks,
Watch, after many days,
The filmy veil of greenness
That thickens as we gaze.
An opal-hearted country,
A wilful, lavish land -
All you who have not loved her,
You will not understand -
Though earth holds many splendours,
Wherever I may die,
I know to what brown country
My homing thoughts will fly.

Media Release 10 January 2011
Member for Page, Janelle Saffin is encouraging local primary producers and small businesses affected by recent flooding in the electorate of Page to contact the NSW Rural Assistance Authority to see if they are eligible for flood recovery grants now available.
To be eligible, applicants need to show that 51 per cent of their income is derived from production – based on copies of their latest personal and business taxation returns, as well as satisfying other criteria.
A package of one-off “Category C Grants” – worth up to $15,000 – is available under the National Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA) provided jointly by Federal and NSW Governments.
Category C assistance will help primary producers with general clean up costs including the removal of debris and dead livestock, purchase of fodder, replacement trading stock, repairs to damaged equipment and property access – without which production and viability could be disrupted beyond the next season. It will help small businesses affected by flooding to conduct repairs and resume trading as soon as possible.
Category C assistance does not compensate for income losses and is not intended to replace insurance. It does not cover damage to dwellings, damages covered by insurance and cost of using own labour, existing staff or own equipment.
“A lot of producers and businesses in the region have been doing it extremely tough as a result of flooding,” Janelle Saffin said.
“For producers and farmers, crops have been destroyed and livestock has been lost.
“It’s clear that many small businesses have also suffered significant disruption to their businesses.
“This additional assistance is about helping farmers and businesses get back on their feet.
“These one-off grants will help minimise the economic impact of the floods in the affected communities and help people get back to business as quickly as possible.
“The Gillard Labor Government would continue to work with the NSW Government to provide as much support to NSW communities as we can as the recovery process continues.”
The new assistance for small business owners and primary producers is in addition to other joint Commonwealth/NSW Government assistance being provided under the NDRRA across affected Local Government Areas. That includes concessional loans of up to $130,000 for small businesses and primary producers; concessional loans of up to $25,000 for voluntary, non-profit organisations; road and rail freight subsidies of up to $15,000 to assist primary producers for the carriage of livestock and fodder; personal hardship and distress assistance; restoration of public infrastructure; and certain counter disaster operations.
Applications for assistance must be lodged to the NSW Rural Assistance Authority by Thursday 30 June, 2011.
For further information, or to apply for assistance under the Natural Disaster Community Recovery Package, call the NSW Rural Assistance Authority on 1800 678 593 or visit www.raa.nsw.gov.au

From the War Room at Salon on 6 January 2010:
No, they didn't refuse to extradite some fugitive slaves. They just acted like duly elected Representatives without being sworn in!
The new Republican majority already committed a major boehner on the second day of the new Congress. Representatives Pete Sessions of Texas and Mike Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania were busy attending a fundraiser when all their colleagues were actually sworn in as members of Congress. So, whoops, they're not members yet. No biggies, right? Wrong! Because then they both showed up to work and cast some votes, in direct violation of our Constitution, which they then participated in the official reading of, on the floor of the House.
Sessions even chaired the Rules Committee while he wasn't a member, because in 2011, all jokes will officially write themselves.

Clarence Valley Council management has made yet another attempt to ditch the Yamba By-Pass plan put in place to relieve negative impacts on Yamba Road residents and road users generally.
The first few times abandonment was mooted staff wanted to sell land back to developers and this time environmental issues are cited.
Mayor Richie Williamson is traversing quicksand when he supports staff in this matter and it could be a real vote loser for him in March 2011, as most Yamba residents would have little faith in the designated land being effectively protected if the by-pass was permanently shelved.
Particularly as the by-pass land lies along the top of an area defined as 'West Yamba,' which is mostly owned by aggressive professional developers and was itself an area with considerable biodiversity/conservation values.
Local government has a long history of rolling over and playing dead for developers in Yamba and, this current set of councillors were the ones who finally forced the West Yamba 'green fields' urban development land release on a predominately unwilling community.

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for flash flooding in the Northern Rivers and Northern Tablelands at 4:23 am EDT on Monday 10 January 2011:
A high near New Zealand is maintaining a humid east to northeasterly airstream across New South Wales. A trough off the southern Queensland coast is creating enhanced rainfall, which is forecast to move into northeast New South Wales during Monday.
Rain and thunderstorms, which may lead to flash flooding, are forecast for the Northern Rivers forecast district and northern parts of the Northern Tablelands forecast district during Monday.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
Don't drive, ride or walk through flood water.
Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.
The next warning will be issued by 11:00 am EDT Monday.
A flood watch remains in place for the Tweed, Brunswick, Richmond/Wilsons, Clarence and Bellinger River Valleys.
The above catchments are wet from recent rain so there is a higher than 70 per cent chance of local and main river flooding developing.
The SES is preparing for level three flood operations which is a major flood event.
This flood watch means that people living or working along rivers and streams must monitor the latest weather forecasts and warnings and be ready to move to higher ground should flooding develop.........
Flood Warnings will be reissued when sufficient rain has fallen to raise river levels above minor flood level at forecast locations.
Remember to never drive, ride or walk through floodwater and keep listening to ABC Local Radio, your emergency services broadcaster.

Natalie O'Brien writing in The Age on 9 January 2011 Vodafone mobile records leaked:
THE personal details of millions of Vodafone customers, including names, home addresses, driver's licence numbers and credit card details, have been available on the web in what is described as an ''unbelievable'' lapse in security by the mobile phone giant.
The Sunday Age is aware of criminal groups paying for the private details of some Vodafone customers to blackmail them.
Other people have apparently obtained logins to check their spouse's communications.
The personal details, accessible from any computer because they are kept on an internet site rather than Vodafone's internal system, include numbers dialled or texted, plus the time and location of calls or texts.
The full extent of the privacy breach is unknown, but The Sunday Age has learnt that possibly thousands of people have logins that can be passed around and used to gain access to the accounts of about 4 million Vodafone clients.
Michael Fraser, head of the Australian Communications Law Centre at the University of Technology Sydney, said it seemed to be a major breach of the company's privacy obligations and ''unbelievably slack security''.

Glen Greenwald writing in Salon on 7 January 2011:
Last night, Birgitta Jónsdóttir -- a former WikiLeaks volunteer and current member of the Icelandic Parliament -- announced (on Twitter) that she had been notified by Twitter that the DOJ had served a Subpoena demanding information "about all my tweets and more since November 1st 2009." Several news outlets, including The Guardian, wrote about Jónsdóttir's announcement.
What hasn't been reported is that the Subpoena served on Twitter -- which was ordered by a federal court -- seeks the same information for numerous other individuals currently or formerly associated with WikiLeaks, including Jacob Appelbaum, Rop Gongrijp, and Julian Assange. It also seeks the same information for Bradley Manning and for WikiLeaks' Twitter account.
The information demanded by the DOJ is sweeping in scope. It includes all mailing addresses and billing information known for the user, all connection records and session times, all IP addresses used to access Twitter, all known email accounts, as well as the "means and source of payment," including banking records and credit cards. It seeks all of that information for the period beginning November 1, 2009 through the present. A copy of the court-ordered Subpoena served on Twitter is here.
The Subpoena was court ordered, signed by a federal Magistrate Judge in the Eastern District of Virginia, Theresa Buchanan. It states that there is "reasonable ground to believe that the records or other information sought are relevant and material to an ongoing criminal investigation." It was issued on December 14 and ordered sealed -- i.e., kept secret from the targets of the Order. On January 5, the same judge ordered the subpoena unsealed at Twitter's request in order to inform the users of the Subpoena and give them 10 days to object; had Twitter not so requested, it could have turned over this information without the knowledge of its users. A copy of the unsealing order is here.
However, what is fascinating about the unsealing order of 5 January 2011 is that - it's not in order. Look closely.......

Note: This Flood Watch is a "heads up" for possible future flooding and is NOT a Flood Warning [see note below].
Further heavy rain is predicted for the NSW northern rivers from Sunday to Tuesday.
The above catchments are wet from recent rain so there is a higher than 70% of local and main river flooding developing during Sunday evening onwards in the following:
1. Tweed Valley - moderate flooding including local flooding in several areas including Chillingham
2. Richmond and Wilsons Valleys - moderate to major flooding
3. Brunswick Valley - moderate to major flooding
4. Clarence Valley - including the Orara River - minor to moderate flooding
5. Bellingen Valley - minor to moderate flooding
This Flood Watch means that people living or working along rivers and streams must monitor the latest weather forecasts and warnings and be ready to move to higher ground should flooding develop. Flood Warnings will be issued if Minor Flood Level is expected to be exceeded at key sites along the main rivers for which the Bureau of Meteorology provides a flood warning service. Across NSW, about 70% of Flood Watches are followed by flooding.

When ABC Radio began a dedicated twenty-four hour news broadcast I was delighted and it is probably still my first preference for national news and current affairs over the airwaves.
When ABC Television announced it was following with a dedicated twnety-four hour news channel I expected at least the same level of immediacy and range of subject matter as that on the radio.
How wrong I was. ABC TV News24 is the most basic of news padded out by endless self-promotion and current affairs repeats of repeats of repeats over day after day after day.
Infrastructure and Transport Minister Anthony Albanese is on the NSW North Coast and will hold a doorstop following a briefing from local mayors about the impact of the recent floods.
The following mayors will be attendance: Jennifer Dowell (Lismore), Ernie Bennett (Kyogle), Phillip Silver (Ballina), Col Sullivan (Richmond Valley) and Richie Williamson (Clarence Valley).
Google Images photograph of Saffin and Abanese in less stressful times on the North CoastPOPULATION growth in the Valley is bringing with it increasing demands on services and facilities. To help finance those extra demands, Clarence Valley Council is introducing Section 94 (developer) Contribution Plans. The State Government recently set a maximum threshold of $20,000 for developed areas and $30,000 for ‘greenfield’ sites.
Err….Section 94s have been in place across the Clarence Valley for many years, based on the ENVIRONMENTAL PLANNING AND ASSESSMENT ACT 1979 - SECT 94.The NSW Government’s decision to cap developer contributions could see new home owners in greenfields housing estates left without adequate facilities and households facing steep rises in rates, according to the Planning Institute of Australia’s NSW division.
and
PLANNING experts have warned a government decision to cap the amount of money councils can charge developers to pay for infrastructure will increase the cost of new houses - the opposite effect to that intended.
The president of the Planning Institute of Australia, Tony McNamara, said he feared a government imposed cap of $20,000 on developer levies would force up housing prices because councils in growth areas would be reluctant to approve new land for housing subdivisions, exacerbating the housing shortage.
Councils in several growth areas on Sydney's fringe have announced they will refuse to process new development applications, saying they cannot pay for the shortfall in infrastructure that will result from the new rules.
While this move is part of a NSW Government plan to eventually reduce the cost of State infrastructure contributions.
Now I can understand Williamson getting carried away by his enthusiasm for higher office and vamping a mayoral media release of what is essentially old news canvassed twice in mid-2010 in newspaper articles It's a taxing argument and Developer cap not a concern for CV, but what I cannot understand is the local media accepting this recent political beat-up so uncritically and churning out what comes perilously close to misinformation.
Like Yamba in the Clarence Valley, theYaamba area to the north of Rockhampton is also a rural/regional holiday destination for many and the preferred home to a lucky few.
So, as radio reports begin to inform the nation that the flood gauge at Yaamba this morning reached a reading that just edged above the 16.65m 1991 flood level recorded for that part of the Fitzroy River catchment, I’m sure everyone here at North Coast Voices sends their best wishes to this small rural village and all Queenslanders affected by this massive flood.

Hi! My name is Boy. I'm a male bi-coloured tabby cat. Ever since I discovered that Malcolm Turnbull's dogs were allowed to blog, I have been pestering Clarencegirl to allow me a small space on North Coast Voices.
A false flag musing: I have noticed one particular voice on Facebook which is Pollyanna-positive on the subject of the Port of Yamba becoming a designated cruise ship destination. What this gentleman doesn’t disclose is that, as a principal of Middle Star Pty Ltd, he could be thought to have a potential pecuniary interest due to the fact that this corporation (which has had an office in Grafton since 2012) provides consultancy services and tourism business development services.
A religion & local government musing: On 11 October 2017 Clarence Valley Council has the Church of Jesus Christ Development Fund Inc in Sutherland Local Court No. 6 for a small claims hearing. It would appear that there may be a little issue in rendering unto Caesar. On 19 September 2017 an ordained minister of a religion (which was named by the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse in relation to 40 instances of historical child sexual abuse on the NSW North Coast) read the Opening Prayer at Council’s ordinary monthly meeting. Earlier in the year an ordained minister (from a church network alleged to have supported an overseas orphanage closed because of child abuse claims in 2013) read the Opening Prayer and an ordained minister (belonging to yet another church network accused of ignoring child sexual abuse in the US and racism in South Africa) read the Opening Prayer at yet another ordinary monthly meeting. Nice one councillors - you are covering yourselves with glory!
An investigative musing: Newcastle Herald, 12 August 2017: The state’s corruption watchdog has been asked to investigate the finances of the Awabakal Aboriginal Local Land Council, less than 12 months after the troubled organisation was placed into administration by the state government. The Newcastle Herald understands accounting firm PKF Lawler made the decision to refer the land council to the Independent Commission Against Corruption after discovering a number of irregularities during an audit of its financial statements. The results of the audit were recently presented to a meeting of Awabakal members. Administrator Terry Lawler did not respond when contacted by the Herald and a PKF Lawler spokesperson said it was unable to comment on the matter. Given the intricate web of company relationships that existed with at least one former board member it is not outside the realms of possibility that, if ICAC accepts this referral, then United Land Councils Limited (registered New Zealand) and United First Peoples Syndications Pty Ltd(registered Australia) might be interviewed. North Coast Voices readers will remember that on 15 August 2015 representatives of these two companied gave evidence before NSW Legislative Council General Purpose Standing Committee No. 6 INQUIRY INTO CROWN LAND. This evidence included advocating for a Yamba mega port.
A Nationals musing: Word around the traps is that NSW Nats MP for Clarence Chris Gulaptis has been talking up the notion of cruise ships visiting the Clarence River estuary. Fair dinkum! That man can be guaranteed to run with any bad idea put to him. I'm sure one or more cruise ships moored in the main navigation channel on a regular basis for one, two or three days is something other regular river users will really welcome. *pause for appreciation of irony* The draft of the smallest of the smaller cruise vessels is 3 metres and it would only stay safely afloat in that channel. Even the Yamba-Iluka ferry has been known to get momentarily stuck in silt/sand from time to time in Yamba Bay and even a very small cruise ship wouldn't be able to safely enter and exit Iluka Bay. You can bet your bottom dollar operators of cruise lines would soon be calling for dredging at the approach to the river mouth - and you know how well that goes down with the local residents.
A local councils musing: Which Northern Rivers council is on a low-key NSW Office of Local Government watch list courtesy of feet dragging by a past general manager?
A serial pest musing: I'm sure the Clarence Valley was thrilled to find that a well-known fantasist is active once again in the wee small hours of the morning treading a well-worn path of accusations involving police, local business owners and others.
An investigative musing: Which NSW North Coast council is batting to have the longest running code of conduct complaint investigation on record?
A fun fact musing: An estimated 24,000 whales migrated along the NSW coastline in 2016 according to the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and the migration period is getting longer.
A which bank? musing: Despite a net profit last year of $9,227 million the Commonwealth Bank still insists on paying below Centrelink deeming rates interest on money held in Pensioner Security Accounts. One local wag says he’s waiting for the first bill from the bank charging him for the privilege of keeping his pension dollars at that bank.
A Daily Examiner musing: Just when you thought this newspaper could sink no lower under News Corp management, it continues to give column space to Andrew Bolt.
A thought to ponder musing: In case of bushfire or flood - do you have an emergency evacuation plan for the family pet?
An adoption musing: Every week on the NSW North Coast a number of cats and dogs find themselves without a home. If you want to do your bit and give one bundle of joy a new family, contact Happy Paws on 0419 404 766 or your local council pound.
