NSW coastline becoming thick with shark nets and drumlines

"The RSPCA does not support killing sharks as a response to shark incidents involving humans. This approach causes unnecessary animal suffering to both target and non-target species. In addition, culling disturbs marine ecosystems and affects protected and vulnerable species including the targeted great white shark and non-target species such as the grey nurse shark. The available scientific evidence does not convincingly support the claim that killing sharks will reduce the risk to public safety. The RSPCA only accepts the management of wild animals where it is justified, effective and humane; the killing of sharks does not meet these criteria......

Drumlines
A drumline consists of a floating drum (a rubber buoy) with one line attached to an anchor on the sea floor, while a second line features a large, baited hook to lure, catch and ultimately kill sharks.....
SMART drumline is designed to be a non-lethal method which, via a satellite link, sends an alert when the baited hook has been ‘taken’, with the aim that the shark or other species will be retrieved within a short period of time to enable live release. " [RSPCA,"What is the RSPCA’s view on killing sharks to reduce shark incidents?"]

Live release from drumlines is not always successful and over time many more non-target marine species than sharks are hooked on these lines, including protected & vulnerable species

The jury is also out on whether SMART drumlines are actually an effective shark mitigation strategy.

There are now 15 potentially lethal SMART drum lines approx. 500m offshore along an est. 52km long stretch of coastal waters between Woody Head and Wooli on the Clarence Coast.

These drumlines have been in place since late last year and will be deployed until mid-2022, allegedly being placed in ocean waters at dawn and retrieved at dusk.

SATURDAY 12 FEBRUARY 2022: Four state by-elections are being held today in the NSW electorates of Bega, Monaro, Strathfield & Willoughby. Polling booths close at 6pm & results will be online

The four Saturday, 12 February 2022 NSW by-elections for Bega, Monaro, Strathfield and Willoughby are being conducted under rules where every voter is automatically being sent ballot papers in a postal vote pack

As of 11 February the rates of pre-poll & postal voting were:

Bega – 29.4% of enrolled voters have cast a pre-poll and 21.3% returned a postal vote

Monaro – 23.1% of enrolled voters have cast a pre-poll and 15.3% returned a postal vote

Strathfield – 16.3% of enrolled voters have cast a pre-poll and 26.4% returned a postal vote

Willoughby – 9.6% of enrolled voters have cast a pre-poll and 28.1% returned a postal vote.

Postal votes envelopes will be processed in the week after the election, but there will be no counting of postal votes until Saturday 19 February. This will make it harder to call results at the end of election night counting as so many votes are postal.

It is currently planned that the final results will be announced by the Electoral Commissioner by Friday, 11 March.

ABC 24 Hour News Channel will air ABC News NSW Byelections Special between 6pm-9pm tonight AEDST.

Will Richmond Valley be sending a local farmer and environmental lawyer to the NSW Legislative Council to replace The Greens outgoing David Shoebridge?

Sue Higginson is an environmental lawyer and dryland rice farmer on the Richmond Valley floodplain. As part of farming practice she protects core koala habitat in the area through regenerating habitat and biodiversity and planting thousands of trees.

Echo, 9 February 2022:

A casual vacancy has arisen for the Greens in the NSW upper house, and Sue Higginson is hoping to take the place of the vacating David Shoebridge.

Shoebridge is the Greens’ lead Senate candidate in the upcoming Federal election – as soon as the election is announced, he says he will resign his seat in the NSW Legislative Council…..

Ms Higginson is an environmental lawyer, activist, and a tireless advocate for justice. For many years, she was the CEO and principal solicitor of the Environmental Defender’s Office (EDO), running the highest-profile environmental litigation in the country.

I’ve taken coal and mining giants to court – like Rio Tinto and Santos, Whitehaven, Adani – and I’ve won. I’ve taken governments to court for wrong decisions, and I’ve advised many MPs in NSW Parliament’, Ms Higginson says.

Planning experience

As a public interest planning lawyer, I have an intimate understanding of the planning system. Planning law impacts our lives in every way. It determines what can and can’t happen in your local environment. Our planning laws need a significant shake up to address climate change, and put the protection of the environment and the health of our communities first’.

I know what that planning law system looks like and I would love to be in a position to advocate for it.’

For over a decade, Ms Higginson says ‘the Liberals have run a destructive economic agenda, serving the elite, and leaving so many behind, while the Nationals have plundered, and continue to plunder, our environment – like there’s no tomorrow’.

I’ve seen firsthand how they set the rules to serve their corporate masters and their mining mates, their time’s coming to an end.’ …..

I will pick up where David left off. I’m an experienced lawyer with forensic skill and an insatiable appetite for justice. I have expertise across all of David’s portfolios.’

The ballot opens on February 9.
